Ladle Serving Lessons
This is my gift. It was given to me at the end of a lovely dinner party, recently - Nessie, the ladle.
It was a warm, intimate gathering where the table decorations alone were a fiest - a spread of hidden delights covered in dome lids, each paired with a Nessie freestanding cleverly. I was touched by the honesty and openness - I always am when people choose to be themselves.
At the end of a lovely evening, I received a brown paper bag. 'It's nothing much,' I was told, 'just a little take home gift'.
'Wow, it has a face' was the second thing I noticed when I looked inside the bag. Nessie (as it said on the labelling), is Lockness, for short. 'I have a Lockness monster ladle' I thought. 'Not too many people have one of those.' The very first thing I noticed however, was the impact of the gesture. Immediately, I knew that this thoughtful touch would commemorate the evening in my heart and mind forever.
As you see this is not a tragedy channelled into something good, it is a Purple Hero of another kind. In this fast paced world where greetings are quick, friendships are sometimes temporary and etiquette is regimented, the sparkling, never-to-be-forgotten, reflection of 'I' is often too risky to give away.
For these reasons, I know that every time I serve my soup from now onward and Nessie looks at me with his subtle face, I will remember... to look closely at what I am given and appreciate its detail; to be true to myself and others by making a gift of my authenticity; that while Nessie is a monster, he serves.
In a nutshell, to be a little more observant, a little more real, and a little less judging, surely earns the title Purple Hero. This winter - when so many tragedies are happening around the world - may soup warm stomachs as well as hearts. Bon appetite!
Thanks for coming
Louise
